Greetings Earthlings. Long ago (OK, not that long ago) two of your Enviro Show co-hosts were hugging trees with the likes of Mass Earth First!, those scruffy nature-boy types who are forever locking down on logging equipment and dropping stink bombs into the corporados executive suites in defense of Mother Earth. Now that we are mature and responsible citizens we no longer engage in such disreputable actions and much prefer to stir up trouble here in the comfort of our underground bunker behind the lines. However, there’s always another bunch of green reinforcements ready to be sent up to the front and our guest, Lundy of Western Mass Earth First! is one of those. We get into all sorts of down & dirty direct action high jinx shortly, along with visits to The New Boss and The Fool-on-the-Hill, as well as the Enviro Show Echo Chamber but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! Giant Snails Invade Florida!
In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we get right into the issues of the day where it appears that Big Brother has been found once again with its shorts down around its knees and its fingers crossed behind its back. Recent revelations about the National Security Agency’s mass spying on everyone’s phone records and online communications reminds us that Green is the New Red. We’ll devote a whole show to that in the near future but suffice it to say, Corporate America and its minions in government (O wait, there’s a difference?) would have you believe that caring about the planet is suspicious activity. So much for hot air, what about Big Wind? Well, that very same government has announced the auction of federal leases off the Atlantic Ocean coast for the development of offshore wind energy. Did someone say privatization of the Commons?
It’s time once again to visit our Fool-on-the-Hill and since there are soooooo many to choose from how about another two-fer! Our friends at Grist tell us that Sens. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and John Hoeven (R-N.D.), along with 22 of their deluded colleagues wrote a letter to the Prez to not consider climate change when he makes his decision on Keystone. No connection there, right? Never mind the science. Science? Science! We don’t need no stinking science!!
We Meet the New Boss as his administration announces plans to strip Endangered Species Act protections from gray wolves across most of the lower 48 states, abruptly ending one of America’s most important species recovery programs. [We have an Enviro Show Blog Bonus Action on this right here.] “This is like kicking a patient out of the hospital when they’re still attached to life support,” said Noah Greenwald, endangered species director with the Center for Biological Diversity. “Wolves cling to a sliver of their historic habitat in the lower 48, and now the Obama administration wants to arbitrarily declare victory and move on. They need to finish the job that Americans expect, not walk away the first chance they get. This proposal is a national disgrace.” OK Noah, we’ll just add it to the growing list of national disgraces, like say the NSA’s massive domestic spying PRISM program! The Boss says “You can’t have 100 percent security and also have 100 percent privacy and zero inconvenience. We’re going to have to make some choices as a government.” What? Like the choice between the Fourth Amendment and some elusive perception of security? Maybe not.
Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week is fitting for our interview with Lundy of WMass EF! because it comes from the spiritual father of that movement: “Society is like a stew. If you don’t stir it up every once in a while then a layer of scum floats to the top.” – Ed Abbey
After our conversation with Lundy we take a hike…….over to the Bus Stop Billboard:
