FERCNoWorkNew Years Greetings Earthlings. Are we ready for another year at the FERCus? (That’s the Federal Energy “Regulatory” Commission, you may recall). Rosemary Wessel of No Fracked Gas in Mass returns with a crash course in becoming an intervenor against the proposed Kinder Morgan/TGP fracked gas pipeline. You have until 5pm, January 15, 2016 to file for intervenor status with this corporate captured agency. Yes, it’s another chance to give them a piece of your mind and do some monkeying around. That and some of our usual shenanigans such as a trip to see The-Fool-on-the-Hill and ramble around The Enviro Show Echo Chamber, but first it’s time for………..Revenge of the Critters! We absolutely love this one: Mountain Lion attacks pipeline crew! (just one more reason to stop building new pipelines, fossil fools!).

We couldn’t resist going for this Fool-Not-on-the-Hill……yet. Louisiana state Rep. Lenar Whitney, 55 (who operated a dance studio  for 34 years and also worked for oilfield equipment companies)  has thrown her tinfoil hat into the ring running for Louisiana’s open 6th Congressional District seat. Whitney has a YouTube campaign video in which, The Washington Post reports, “Whitney gleefully and confidently asserts that the theory of global warming is the “greatest deception in the history of mankind” and that “any 10-year-old” can disprove it with a simple household thermometer.”  You can see the video here. We figure all those years running a dance studio gave Lenar a leg up on climate science, yes? The Post goes on to report Whitney “cites Minnesota’s Rep. Michele Bachmann (R) as a political role model, and takes kindly to the nickname ‘Palin of the South.’ ”  That works!

Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from our State Senator: “Policy makers are driving us to a green energy future. … Regulators are rooted in energy systems and an energy construct of the past.” – Sen. Stan Rosenberg.  OK, policy makers, (wait, isn’t Stan a policy maker?) get ‘er done!

It’s hard to know where to begin in The Enviro Show Echo Chamber given the number of environmental catastrophes crowding the headlines so we’ll just grab one that’s a investigative follow-up on the last show, LA Weekly’s take on the greatest fossil fools disaster since the BP trashed the Gulf of Mexico. Remember the name Porter Ranch. “The Aliso Canyon leak has increased the state’s methane emissions by 21 percent. As of now, 2.3 percent of the state’s entire carbon footprint is coming from one hole in the ground above Porter Ranch.” It was preventable. Then we have the New Normal putting the lie to terms like “freak storm” aimed at Iceland and the UK where folks are just now recovering from the “record level” storms of a few days ago.  Meanwhile, in South America some countries are experiencing “the worst floods in 50 years” (that is until the next floods in a few years) and the middle of the U.S., during the hottest year ever, are hammered by twice as many tornados lasting far longer than usual while we in the Northeast see the thermometer hit 70 on Christmas Day. How’s THAT for a weather report? Try THIS!  Moving on from the… report?, we take you to this week’s Epic Fail Alert! New pipelines worse than old ones. Surprise!

We have Broken News! Thanks to The Good Green Witch for replaying this piece from last January (something we missed the  first time around). The headline says it all: “Human activity has pushed Earth beyond four of nine ‘planetary boundaries’”. So which boundaries are we talking about? “They are the extinction rate; deforestation; the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; and the flow of nitrogen and phosphorous (used on land as fertilizer) into the ocean.’What the science has shown is that human activities — economic growth, technology, consumption — are destabilizing the global environment,’ said Will Steffen, who holds appointments at the Australian National University and the Stockholm Resilience Center and is the lead author of the paper [published in the journal Science].” AND we have Breaking News! This just in: the Conservation Law Foundation is appealing to Supreme Judicial Court on the Baker Administration’s lack of real action on our Global Warming Solutions Act.

Finally, we have some E-Valley-uation of TGP’s response on Wednesday to FERC regarding their determination earlier this month that parts of TGP’s application for a certificate of public convenience and necessity for the proposed NED fracked gas pipeline were incomplete. Actually, TGP’s response was…..also incomplete! Be that as it may, The Greenfield Recorder reports “The filing also said TGP will comply with all national and state regulations governing greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, including the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, and noted that increased use of natural gas would offset dirtier fuel sources like oil and coal. It said the project would be closely monitored for leaks and other problems throughout the year.” Wait, we thought FERC “doesn’t do warming”! Anyway, there may be more leaks in that statement than in all their leaky pipelines. You can bet we’ll get into that with Rosemary Wessel on the show.

After our interview with Rosemary we take you over to the Bust Stop Billboard:

Saturday, January 16, 11am. “Grow Solar in MA – Pass a Better Bill” vigil at 253 Prospect Street in Northampton, near the parking lot entrance to Congregation B’nai Israel.  The reason is that 5 legislators will be there for the legislative luncheon – Stan Rosenberg, Ellen Story, Ben Downing, Peter Kokut, and Steve Kulik.  We want these 5 legislators to encourage development of solar power in Massachusetts which a current bill does NOT do.
